Just Try It! Program - St. Catharines - 3/4/2010

St. Catharines, ON - On Saturday, February 27, 2010, the St. Catharines CYO Minor Hockey Association and ALLIANCE Hockey welcomed 16 children aged 5 -12 and their families to the Seymour Hannah Sports & Entertainment Centre for the first "Just Try It!" hockey program.  The program is designed to give children who have never played ice hockey a chance to try it, free of charge.  Thanks to very generous donations we were able to provide each of the children with all the equipment they needed to participate, and at the end of the day they were able to keep the skates, sticks, jerseys and helmets so that they could continue to practice the skills they learned!

The children were given a tour of the arena, had a classroom session which introduced them to hockey basics and a two-hour on-ice session which included tips on skating, stopping, turning, puck handling and some simple drills.  Following the on-ice session the players and their families along with the instructors and organizers headed to the classroom for lunch and a wrap-up session.  After lunch the players were all given goodie bags filled with some great gifts from ALLIANCE Hockey.  To cap off the day the kids were each presented with two tickets to see the Niagara Ice Dogs in action!

We would like to thank our very generous sponsors for their contributions:

  • Our on-ice coaches and helpers and all the people who gave their time to make this day a very special one
  • Kidz Can Help - a full set of equipment
  • Front Row Sports - skate sharpening for every player
  • Tim Hortons - coffee & Timbits
  • Niagara Ice Dogs - two tickets for each player
